As a parent, can I demand to see my child’s mental health records?

If the child is younger than 13, yes. If the child is older than 13 and has signed their own consent to treat then you may only have access such as the child allows by completing an ROI. If you gave the consent to treat for your child you may request records be sent directly to another health provider such as their primary care provider, but not request records for your own use.

If your 13+ year old child is in control of their own mental health treatment, as per RCW 71.34.530, and has requested that your access to their mental health records be disallowed then we will not be able to give you any information with regard to their ongoing appointments or treatment and will direct you to discuss any access issues you may have with your child.
